Behringer Tweakalizer

Posted: Mon, 08/25/2008 - 17:04

So... I'm seriously considering getting one of these babies in the next week or two...
Anyone had any experience with them (or similar)?

Any suggestions? (better options, more bang for buck and associated tips please!)
Something that'd control midi too (KaosPad?) would be sweet, but not essential...  I like the sampling potential this thing has, too...

"Don't be fooled by its cutesy looks: the TWEAKALIZER DFX69 is an extremely powerful desktop DJ effects processor with real-time control. Behind its super-intuitive user interface is the power to simultaneously control 6 functions, an incredible real-time scratch function and a super-fast and accurate auto-BPM counter. For example, you can adjust track speed using the virtually inaudible Pitch Transposer, and you also get a breathtaking LFO-controlled effects section including delay & flanger and awesome filter effects with 3 filter types (low, high and band pass), 3 filter modes (auto, manual, LFO) and separate resonance control.

There is a groove- and BPM-related loop sampler with up to 16 seconds of memory as well as an ultra-steep 3-band kill EQ (-40 dB) with separate cut buttons per band. A switchable phono/line input with built-in high-precision phono preamplifier lets you connect turntables and CD players, and a signal/effect balance and input gain control provide top flexibility.

Ultra high-resolution 24-bit A/D and D/A converters and a high-performance 24/48-bit DSP provide ultimate in sonic resolution. If you’re looking for a straightforward way to tweak your sound, we've got an amazing machine for you."

? I know it doesn't do midi control... I'm mainly after it's sound-mutilation potential when it comes to sampling, chopping and otherwise fucking with stuff like vocal samples etc...

I've been giving this a fair bit of thought, and one of the major issues I have is not enough knobs, which leads to multiple tracks/patterns all being assigned to the same knob... while this works quite effectively and interestingly in some cases, it seems a waste to tie up knobs with vocal sample manipulation (especially when messing around with a 1hr podcast, lecture or whatever) that is all fairly stock standard, so, my reasoning is to have a unit that can be dedicated to a large vocal sample, or a series of drum loops or whatever... Basically that frees me up to do a lot more twisty-bendy shit to midi-based leads, pads and, of course, more manipulable, multi-layered basslines... But, after saying all that, of course midi control would be a big plus... any idea of a unit that does all of this PLUS midi control? AFAIK the Kaoss Pad doesn't have a sampler built in(?) Dunno if that reasoning made sense... I suspect it's an uncoordinated work-flow issue more than anything else... am still getting my head around midi-assignment-potential, seeing as I've always worked with a very "tracker" type method in the past...

the kp2

does have a built in sampler. but is also limited to 20 seconds or something. similar deal.... although the tweakilizer appears to have more individual control over effect parameters. for $200 pretty cheap compared to a kaoss pad. i cant really comment on the kp3 though as i have never laid hands on it.

right...

...didn't realize that... and I s'pose given the extra FUNctionality, it's prolly a far sweeter deal... Been looking around a fair bit today, and still haven't come up with anything else very similar at all... the Novation Nocturn looks like a cheapish quick-fix of sorts (as does the BCR2000) but neither allow for sampling... and that "speed-dial" feature on the Nocturn could cause some serious issues when it comes to messing around when you're "not quite with it" ;) I'm watching a KP2 on ebay at the mo'... I'm just a bit reluctant to buy one (from a shop) at the current price, as I've kinda been hoping they'd drop dramatically with the release of the KP3... there's nothing as annoying as a "sweet deal" that becomes a waste when prices drop a few weeks later... I've also been thinking seriously about creating my own ULTRAKNOBBLY BEHEMOTH controller... I have all the technical know-how and equipment to put one together, aside from how to make my own PCBs... but that's another thread altogether, methinks!

BCR2000/BCR Performer 1.0

  • Fri, 09/26/2008 - 15:11

Well, still haven't got 'round to getting a new musical equipments yet, but just came across this bewdy by the Covert Operators, which I think kinda seals the deal...  will deifinitely make life far easier and more straightforward, considering my slap-dash methodology...

What is BCR Performer?

BCR Performer is an application that acts as a driver for the Behringer BCR2000 MIDI Controller. One of the strong points of the BCR is the fact that it updates the LED's on the knobs and buttons based on information received from Audio/MIDI Software. This means that unlike normal knobs, the knobs on the BCR are always updated to be at the correct value. If you assign a knob on the BCR to the Filter Cutoff of a synth, the host will in turn send a message to the BCR to make sure the correct value is displayed on the LED's around a knob.

This works within a single BCR preset, but when you work with multiple BCR presets, only the preset that is in front will receive updates. This is where the BCR Performer Application comes into play.

The application allows you to have 16 presets within a single BCR preset. BCR Performer acts as a memory device that does a far better job than the BCR hardware. It will store every single MIDI CC that is assigned to something in your host software (ie. Ableton Live).

When you choose a preset, all the knobs and buttons on your BCR are updated to reflect the values of the parameters assigned to that preset. 16 presets sending messages on 16 MIDI Channels. A knob that transmits CC1 on Channel 1 in the 1st preset will send out CC1 on Channel 14 when you select the 14th preset.

To remember what all these parameters do, the BCR Performer Application allows you to create text labels for the 16 presets. You can also import and export label files. CC values are not stored. Most audio software like Ableton Live store the values in their project files. These values are transmitted to the controller (or the application in this case) when you load a project or turn MIDI Learn on and off.
